Adelphi University is a private, nonsectarian university located in Garden City, which is a village in the Town of Hempstead in central Nassau County, in the US state of New York, with a population estimated at a number of more than 21 500 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Adelphi was established in June, 1896, and it is the oldest institution of higher learning on Long Island.
The university currently has an enrollment of more than 8000 students, and offers various educational programs, in numerous fields of study, including in arts and sciences, dentistry, engineering, environmental studies, and many other.
Adelphi's athletic teams are known as the Panthers, which compete in NCAA Division II, in 17 varsity sports, for both men and women, including in NCAA Division I for men's soccer and women's bowling. Their distinctive colors are brown and gold and their mascot is the Panther.
